This document details how to change the default font, font size, and page margins in Word.
Word 2016
How to Change the Default Font in Word 2010 Create a new document that is based on the Normal template. To do this, click File, click New, click Blank Document, and then click Create. Changing Default Fonts in Word To change the default font settings, click the small box with an arrow in the lower right corner of the Font section of the Home tab in the Ribbon. In the Font dialog box, choose the default font settings you want.
- Open a new document of the template you would like to update the default settings for. In most cases, this will be Blank document.
- Select the expand icon underneath Home > Font as shown below.
- Modify the font settings as desired, then select Set As Default as shown below.
- Confirm the changes for all documents of this type by selecting All documents based on the Normal template and then selecting Yes.
- For more advanced settings, such as character spacing, select Advanced and follow the same procedure to Set As Default.
- To modify the default margins, select the expand button underneath Layout > Page Setup and change the settings as desired.
- Confirm the changes by selecting Yes when prompted to set as the default for all documents of this type.
Word 2010/2013
- Open a new document, click on the Home tab, click on the Font dialog box button as shown in the screenshot below, and select the Font tab.
- Choose the font settings that you would like to make the default and click Set As Default
- Select All documents based on the Normal.dotm template? and click OK to update the default for all new documents.
- To change Word's default page margins, click on the Page Layout tab and click on the Page Setup dialog box button as shown in the screenshot below.
- Set the new margins that you would like to make the default and click Set As Default
- Click Yes to apply the new margins to all new documents.
Word 2007
- Open a new document, click on the Home tab, click on the Font Dialog Box Launcher (as shown in the screenshot below) and select the Font tab.
- Select a new font and size in the Font dialog box, and then click Default.
Word will ask you if you want these changes to apply to all new documents using the 'Normal template' (normal.dot).
- Click Yes to make the changes permanent. The change will apply to Word's Normal/default style and to all styles based on Normal.
- To change Word's default page margins, click the Page Setup Dialog Box launcher as shown in the screenshot below.
- The first tab should be Margins. Make your changes to the margins here, and then click Default.
- Click Yes when Word asks you to confirm the changes. This warning will look exactly like the one shown above.
Note:You can also change other settings affecting page layout (including paper orientation and line numbering) in the same dialog box.
Word 2003 and Word XP
- Open a new document and select Format > Font.
- Select a new font and size in the Font dialog box, and then click Default. Word will ask you if you want these changes to apply to all new documents using the 'Normal template' (normal.dot).
- Click Yes to make the changes permanent. The change will apply to Word's Normal/default style and to all styles based on Normal.
- To change Word's default page margins, select File > Page Setup. The first tab should be Margins, make your changes to the margins here, and then click Default.
- Click Yes when Word asks you to confirm the changes. This warning will look exactly like the one shown above.

Symptoms
When you set a font as the default font in Microsoft Office Word 2010 and Word 2013, and you then restart Word, the changes are not retained.
Cause
This can happen when you only apply the settings to the open document and not to all documents.
Resolution
Method 1
To set and make sure that the style of the default font in Word 2010 or Word 2013 is retained or saved, follow these steps:
If you do not have a document open, create a new document that is based on the Normal template. To do this, click File, click New, click Blank Document, and then click Create.
In the Font group, click the Font flyout to open the font dialog box.
Select the options that you want to apply to the default font, such as font style and font size. If you selected specific text, the properties of the selected text are set in the dialog box.
Click Set As Default.
Update Office from the Mac App Store. If you downloaded Office from the Mac App Store, and have automatic updates turned on, your apps will update automatically. Select All documents based on the Normal.dotm template?
Click OK.
This guarantees that every new document you open will use the font settings that you selected and set as the default. The default font applies to new documents that are based on the active template, usually Normal.dotm.
Method 2
To set and make sure that the style of the default font in Word 2013 is retained or saved, follow these steps:
- If you do not have a document open, create a new document that is based on the Normal template. To do this, click File, click New, click Blank Document, and then click Create.
- Click on the Design tab at the top and set all of the options that you want in your template.
- Click Set as Default.
- Click OK.
